Lot 7 Great Britain Queen Elizabeth II

Description

1966 - Original low-relief sculpture portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin – one of five or six similar designs produced around March-April 1966 as essays for the proposed new definitive QEII stamps. The portrait is based on the design Machin created two years earlier for the new Elizabethan British coinage. The other known essays feature different crown designs and at least two are held in museums or institutional collections. This example is notably without the “string of pearls” necklace of the famous adopted design which prevailed from 1967-2022. Beautiful and unique thus. An important QEII and iconic stamp design exhibition item. The portrait is approximately 380 mm (15 inches) in diameter, with mount, 450 mm (17.7 inches) square by 70 mm (2.75 inches) deep, and shows some small chips to the edge
