Lot 3066 France Cérès 1849

  • Scott9Footnote
  • Yvert8A
Description

France, 1849, 25c on 20c Blue, Red Surcharge (Yvert 8A; Scott 9 Footnote). Original gum, very minor h.r., full balanced margins, bold color and sharp impression
VERY FINE. A CHOICE AND DESIRABLE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1849 25-CENTIMES ON 20-CENTIMES SURCHARGE. A MAJOR FRENCH ESSAY RARITY.
The 20c value (Yvert 8; Scott 4) was printed but not regularly issued due to the rate change from 20c to 25c which made the stamp unnecessary. A trial essay surcharge of "25c" was created but was ultimately rejected.
With 1988 Calves certificate. Yvert €33,000. Footnoted in Scott but unpriced
