3c Rose (65). Bright color, natural straight edge at left, tied by well-struck Clown in Top Hat fancy cancel of Waterbury Conn. (Rohloff E-4) on small piece, "Waterbury Con. Apr. 28 '66" double-circle datestamp, one perf at top affected from placement near edge (truly trivial) EXTREMELY FINE STRIKE OF THE CLOWN IN TOP HAT FANCY CANCELLATION OF WATERBURY CONNECTICUT. This is one of Postmaster John W. Hill's greatest carvings, depicting the profile of a smiling clown in his top hat. Along with the Elephant cancel, it was carved around the time the circus came to the Waterbury area. We record three on cover (one is a part strike). We have offered only two others off cover, including one with the hat struck off the stamp. The cancel offered here is notable for its completeness and for the quality of the strike. Illustrated in Collector's Club Philatelist, Jan.-Feb. 1999, p. 45
