Lot 4009 US Intervention Mexico

Description

1916-17 single Frame (16 pages) Exhibit with 26 covers or cards documenting the postal history of the American Involvement in Northern Mexico prior to U.S. entry into World War I, with "On the Way to Mexico Camp Brumbaugh" patriotic cover, Columbus and Deming, N.Mex 1916 cards; advance into Mexico, The First U.S. Military Air Mail Service, two covers flown from Mexico to Columbus, where they were postmarked (27 Mar and 5 Apr 1916), each mailed by Lt. Baird to his wife, endorsed "Soldier's Mail" and as no stamps were available, both were charged "Due 2c", or with the actual 2c Postage Due (AAMC 92, $5,000), also a ppc depicting the actual Aircraft. In addition, there are covers showing use of Civilian post offices, Forwarded Mail, "U.S. Army on Mexican Border" letterhead and cover posted on a railway car of a train enroute to El Paso; Military Branch markings, Official War Department cover, etc. A fascinating collection (during the Mexican Revolution 1910-20, the United States had varied involvements, supporting and then repudiating Mexican regimes. Beyond Vera Cruz, the US sent thousands of troops led by General John Pershing deep into northern Mexico between 1916-1917 to capture Pancho Villa after his forces raided US border towns)
