1938 VOORTREKKER CENTENARY PIGEON POST: Message "flimsy" ...more
1938 VOORTREKKER CENTENARY PIGEON POST: Message "flimsy" together
with leg wrapper from this pigeon post organised by Park Smith to
commemorate the Centenary of the Voortrekkers and Great Trek. The
birds were released in Bloemfontein on 29 October and reached The
Strand (Cape) the next day. Whilst the manuscript notations and
numberings imply that this pigeongram was number 551 of 743 flown,
it is probable that a far fewer number were actually flown. The
envelope is endorsed on reverse "Pigeon Post Bloemfontein to
Strand, CP. 565 miles. Only 6 carried." In support of that
statement, only two other surviving examples (No's 554 & 558) are
recorded to date. A wonderful complete "set" together with the
envelope in which onward mailed to recipient, franked Voortrekker
Monument 1d tied Cape Town cds 2 XI 38. VF, rare, an aerophilatelic
showpiece. Ex Jeidel & Polakow. See additional images.
