S S WINKFIELD. 1936 envelope from Alexandria (21 AUG 36) ...more
S S WINKFIELD. 1936 envelope from Alexandria (21 AUG 36) to
Birmingham that has been damaged by water, resulting in stamps
being washed off the cover. On the reverse is a two line ‘DAMAGED
BY / SEA WATER’ cachet. This incident was on board the S S
Winkfield, which took on water somewhere during its journey,
probably in the Mediterranean. The S S Winkfield was built by
Pickersgill & Son at Sunderland in 1919 and owned by the British
India Steam Navigation Company. It was initially used ( 1919) as a
troop ship and later as a merchant ship between London and Bombay.
In May 1941 when approaching the Thames Estuary, it was mined and
sunk. An interesting and until now, unrecorded ship incident

SHIP INCIDENT. 1941 ‘The Continental Savoy, Cairo’ envelope to
England sent air mail from F.P.O. 169 16 JY 41. The cover has an
R.A.F Censor 2 h/s and a violet boxed ‘DAMAGED BY SEA-WATER’
cachet. This cover probably travelled by air on the horseshoe route
to Durban, South Africa, and then by surface mail to England. At
some point it was damaged and received the cachet on arrival in
England. Although other covers are known from this incident, to
date it has not been possible to tie this to a specific ship. An
interesting ‘Hotel’ envelope

1931 ‘CITY OF CAIRO’ KOEPANG, TIMOR. The ‘City of Cairo’ left
Croydon on April 4 on a flight to Australia. On April 19 1931 the
De Havilland DH66 Hercules ran out of fuel due to strong headwinds
and an oil leak while approaching Koepang, Timor. All three engines
stopped and the captain attempted an emergency landing 10 miles
short of the airfield. On touching down in a field the aircraft hit
rocks and lost its’ landing gear. While both crew were unhurt, the
aircraft was damaged beyond repair. The well known aviator
Kingsford-Smith flew in and collected the mail a few days later. On
arrival in Australia it received a backstamp, otherwise no official
‘crash’ markings were put on. This cover has a SYDNEY 29 AP 1931
arrival cancel
