Lot 164 German Colonies Kiautschou

Description

Kiauchau, 1900, "5 fP" Error on 10pf Carmine, Ty. "f", Double Surcharge, Additional "5 Pf" Large Surcharge (9d; Michel 4DD1). Two clear impressions of the "5 pF" error surcharge (a "double" error), legible "Tsingtau, Kiautschou 31/7 00" circular datestamp, excellent color VERY FINE AND UNIQUE. ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED ERROR RARITIES OF KIAUCHAU—THE "DOUBLE" ERROR OF "5 FP" INSTEAD OF "5 PF" APPLIED TWICE WITH THE ADDITIONAL LARGE FORMAT "5 PF" SURCHARGE. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE POSSIBLE, MAKING IT ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS OF KIAUCHAU. The term "unique" should be judiciously when describing stamps of any country. This often misused word sometimes is assigned to items of which there is only one example known or recorded, but the potential for another example exists. In the case of the stamp offered here, it is, in fact, the only possible example of this error. Based on the evidence, only one bottom pane (half sheet) was surcharged twice and with the larger format "5 Pf" applied. This "5 fP" error only occurred on Position 93. Therefore, no other example can exist. From the December 1939 Kohler Auction (Sale 104, lot 499). Ex Kirchner. Signed Brandes, Richter, and Willmann. With 1956 B.P.A., and 2008 Jaschke-Lantelme certificates. Listed but unpriced in both Scott and Michel
