Lot 723 Great Britain

  • SG 55
Description

1847/54: Embossed 1 s. green, Die 2, an unused corner marginal block of four from top right of the sheet, large margins all round, very clear and sharp embossing, vertical bend at left; minor soiling on face visible on the neck and bust of the Queen and some slight surface rubbing due to attempts to remove same, otherwise of wonderfully fresh appearance and with near full original gum. The sole recorded block of four from Die 2, with just the two blocks known from Die 1 - one of which was recently sold at Corinphila (sale 349, lot 4133) and is not as attractive as this multiple - a unique and outstanding Exhibition piece for the connoisseur. Cert. Karl Louis (2023) Gi Spec H1(2) = £ 125'000. Provenance: Collection Michael Lea (1970's); collection Major General Sir Leonard Atkinson, Christies, London, 6 Nov 1990, lot 340; collection Sir Gawaine Baillie, Sotheby's, London, 29 Sept 2004, lot 209.
