oval ‘Registered at Vavau, Tonga’ with the number ‘64’ in
manuscript is on the front of the cover. The cover was opened and
resealed by the censor on arrival in New Zealand and a red ‘PASSED
BY THE / MILITARY CENSOR / N.Z.’ handstamp applied. On the reverse
is an Auckland 9 OC 16 arrival c.d.s. Fine and very uncommon

arrival cancel. A late usage of this bisect. A 1990 B.P.A.
Certificate states that the cover is genuine but philatelic (?)

rate, cancelled by a barred duplex of NUKUALOFA 5 JL 93. On the
reverse are Suva 18 JY and Levuka 19 JLY 93 transit and arrival
cancels. Bisecting 1d stamps was authorised from 31 May 1893 prior
to the arrival of the ½d on 1d overprinted stamps on 21 August
1893. A correct usage in the right time period to an uncommon
destination. Fine

On the back of the cover are Auckland 2 DE 95 and partial Colombo and Lyon transit and arrival cancels. Addressed to 'Reverend Pere Hervier, Procureur des Missions,' this was probably written by a missionary in Tonga. A rare commercial cover. 1983 B.P.A. certificate

A boxed 'CLOSED AGAINST INSPECTION' handstamp is on the front of the cover as well as a hexgonal 'T' tax mark. A circular 'TO PAY '8' DOUBL E DEFICIENCY POSTAGE' handstamp is also on the front of the cover. This marking is very similar to New Zealand tax markings, so could have been applied there as the letter went via Auckland (28 DE 03). On arrival in Tonga a ½d and 7½d postage stamps were affixed and used as Postage Dues. These have been cancelled NUKUALOFA JA 18 4. The cover has been opened out for display. A scarce item.
