On June 22, 1933, the Spanish motor vessel Cabo San Antonio sailed
from Buenos Aires for Genoa. On 9 July she put into Las Palmas
(Canary Islands) with a fire in her mail room and No. 7 hold. This
was extinguished by the crew, but not before 387 mail bags had been
destroyed and another 212 bags damaged. The damaged mail was both
burnt and damaged by sea water when the hold was flooded to
extinguish the fire. Mail received a boxed three line boxed cachet,
that was struck in purple. 'Correspondence brulee a bord du
paquebot Cabo S. Antomio.' This cover has a fine example of the
cachet

The steamer General Chanzy sailed from Marseille to Algiers on 9
February 1910. It was swept off course in a heavy storm and struck
the rocks off the north-west coast of Minorca at about 8 a.m. on 10
February. The ship was totally destroyed when the boiler exploded
and of the one hundred and sixty passengers and crew, only one,
Marcel Radez, survived. The vessel could not be salvaged but a few
bags of mail, all seriously damaged, were washed ashore a few days
later. A two line violet cachet 'NAUFRAGE DU / GENERAL CHANZY' was
applied to the recovered mail. This badly water damaged envelope
from Paris to Constantine, Algeria, has a good strike of the cachet

They comprised mainly artillery and heavy machine gun companies and included the Flying Corps Unit 300. They were placed under the command of Kress von Kressenstein, along with the 3rd Turkish Infantry Division, and formed the 1st Expeditionskorps. After the Battle of Rafa in January 1917, which cleared the German and Turkish forces from Sanai, the British Forces advanced to Gaza and defeated the Germans and Turks at the First Battle of Gaza in March 1917 and the 2nd Battle of Gaza on 17 to 19 April 1917. This card must have been written in the “stand off” period between April and October when the two forces faced each other along the Gaza to Beersheba line
