JAPANESE OCCUPATION OF ANDAMAN ISLANDS. 1944 (?) censored Navy post
card from Shikao Kobayashi to his elder sister in Osaka City sent
from PORT BLAIR, ANDAMAN ISLANDS dated November 10 on the front. An
‘I11’ marking means it was from Port Blair and an ‘I32’ marking
meant 12th Special Base Force (that served in Port Blair). He says:
“It may be colder in the morning and in the evening in Japan. How
are you? Does Takeshi go to school in good health every day? I
suppose that Keiko is getting bigger and she must be pretty. I’m
very fine and engaged in military serving. Please don’t worry about
me. There is no strange news to inform you here. Please inform me
about strange news. Please give me information of your husband.
Please take care of your health. I’m trying to be in good health.”
A very scarce card from the Andaman Islands which the Japanese
occupied on 23rd March 1942

JAPANESE OCCUPATION OF NICOBAR ISLANDS. 1944 post card from Isoya
Imai, Sato Unit, I30, c/o Sasebo P.O. to his wife in Kyoto. ‘I30’
meant Nancowry Island in the Nicobar Islands. Sato Unit was part of
the Independent Mixed 37th Brigade of the Japanese Army. The writer
served in Central China and Burma as a member of the 15th Division
before moving to the Nicobar Islands in the summer of 1944. After
the War he was sent to a P.O.W. camp at Rempang Island in the
Netherlands Indies until his repatriation to Japan in June 1946. A
very fine and rare card from the Nicobar Islands

the ...mehr S S SUSSEX 1916. On 24 March 1916 the S S Sussex was torpedoed by the German submarine UB-29 while crossing the English Channel between Folkstone and Dieppe. The ship was badly damaged but managed to be towed into Boulogne. American passengers were on board and a number killed. This caused an outcry in the US and U boat warfare was suspended in Northern Europe between 8 May and 5 July 1916. This mourning cover to India has had the stamp washed off and resealed with a label on the back. Very fine strikes of the violet boxed DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN SEA WATER are on both the front and back of the cover. A fine cover from this incident to India

AVA ...mehr S. S. AVA. 1858 cover to Andover, England, that was on the S. S. AVA that sailed from Calcutta on 10 February 1858 and Maras on February 15th. It ran aground on rocks near Pigeon Island, 80 miles from Trincomalee, Ceylon. Mail was recovered by divers, this cover being on the second batch recovered that was conveyed on the S S Colombo, arriving in London on May 10th. The stamps have been washed of and on arrival a LONDON PAID MY 11 58 datestamp applied. The back has the cachet ‘Saved from the wreck /of the Ava’

A straight line INDIA PAID h/s is on the front of the cover, On the back are FIELD FORCE POST OFFICE ABYSSINIA 17 JA 68 (FF2) dispatch and Guernsey FE 7 68 arrival cancels. Cover faults but a scarce item. R.P.S.L Certificate. The sender of the letter is Captain (later Lieutenant-Colonel) Anthony Durand (1836-1911). The recipient seems to be his mother, Mrs. Havilland Durand. Durand was part of the 10th Native Infantry of the Bombay Army. On 8 October 1867, the 10th sailed from Bombay as part of the advance brigade of the Expedition on SS India, arrived Aden 16 October, left Aden 19 October, and arrived Annesley Bay 21. In Abyssinia, Durand was first a Brigade Major of the Pioneer Force of the First Division. The Pioneer Force was to proceed two marches in advance of the first column and be employed in clearing the road and making it passable for laden elephants and mules. In late March or early April, Captain Durand reverted to regimental duty i.e. Brigade-Major of the 3rd Brigade (Holland, Vol. II, p. 21). He was promoted as Captain on 2 June 1868. Durand and the 10th arrived at Bombay on the SS American on 13 June and proceeded to their next station, Malligaum, reaching 18 June
