STAR OF MALTA. 1955 incoming postal card to Malta that was on the
motor vessel ‘STAR OF MALTA’ that ran aground in thick for and
capsized on the Mercanti Reef off Dragunara Point at the entrance
to Valetta Harbour at 8a.m. on 29 July 1955. One passenger and one
crew member were killed in the accident. A two line cachet ‘DAMAGED
BY SEAWATER / “STAR OF MALTA” 29.7.55 has been applied. Fine and

R. Consulate Austriaco Malta’ and ‘Franco’ with a good strike of
the very scarce straight line MALTA POST OFFICE’ (MPO 2a – 43 x 3mm
recorded used from 5 May 1834 to 1839) h/s. This handstamp has been
underlined in the same colour crayon as the ‘Franco’ suggesting the
Austrian P.O. in Tunis was not to charge any postage. The letter
has two disinfectant chisel slits. A birds feather was inside the
letter! A rare and early official mail letter

A triple ring blue oval cachet FREE FROM PRISONER OF WAR MALTA / P C 5 is on the front of the letter card along with a Turkish boxed censor h/s. There were only 103 Turkish P. O. W’s interned in Malta. In late January 1919, the Allied forces began to arrest Turkish leaders and military commanders by accusing them of war crimes. Many Turkish intellectuals, revolutionaries and Kemalists who opposed the occupation by British were exiled to Malta after being accused of crimes. This letter card is from one of those exiled and interned. A scarce item
