DUBLIN '186' duplex canceller JU 25 1863. On the front of the
envelope is a fine strike in red of the boxed 'LATE LETTER / FEE

reverse is a London JU 26 63 arrival c.d.s

‘ALHENA’ 1941. On January 28 1941, the 4900 ton Dutch Steamer
‘Alhena’ sailed from Liverpool to the Mediterranean after being
delayed in the Mersey Estuary for a week by dense fog. At 11p.m.
the same evening she struck Pladdy Rock just north of South Rock,
County Down off the coast of Northern Ireland. The ship was totally
lost, but without loss of life. The mail was damaged but recovered.
A straight line ‘SALVED FROM THE SEA’ cachet has been applied to
this cover from Kilsburn to Tel Aviv, Palestine

“EROS” 1940. The steamship ‘Eros’ sailed from Montreal, Canada, on
30th May 1940. On the 7th June she was torpedoed by a German
submarine, U-48, off the north west coast of Ireland. The ‘Eros’
was beached and the mail that was in the hold was washed ashore and
salvaged. ‘SALVED FROM THE SEA’ or ‘Recovered from the sea’ cachets
were applied to recovered mail. This cover from Quebec, Canada, has
a good strike of the very scarce Recovered from the Sea cachet that
was applied in Dublin. These Irish cachets are very much scarcer
than the ones applied in England

The 6,327 tons steamship ‘Norwegian’ was built in 1913 for the
Leyland Line. On 13th March 1917, whilst returning from the United
States, she was sunk four miles South West of Seven Heads, County
Cork, Ireland, either by being torpedoed by a German submarine, or
by striking a mine that had been laid by German submarines. Five
people were killed. The mail was salvaged, and on arrival in
England received a black straight line cachet ‘DAMAGED BY SEA
WATER’. This picture post card with the stamps washed off was
posted in Japan. An uncommon origination for mail from this
incident
