Central China, 1949 (3 May) Kiangsi Unit stamp Domestic Ordinary on $40,000 green on 1949 (5 June) envelope to Shanghai, cancelled by "Nanchang" bilingual dotted rim d.s., with writing on reverse, a scarce post-liberation use of a Nationalist Provincial Unit stamp. Chan S71; CSS1645. Estimate 1,800 - 2,200 Nanchang was liberated on 22 May 1949. Communist stamps were not issued in Nanchang until 20 June. One of the earliest references to post-liberation uses of Nationalist stamps in Nanchang appears in the 1952 Universal Stamp Service "Standard Catalogue People's Posts of China" on page 219.

Central China, 1949 (3 May) Kiangsi Unit stamp Domestic Ordinary on $40,000 green horizontal pairs (2, one of each being the "right part of upper left character open at bottom" variety) on reverse of 1949 (6 June) registered envelope to Shanghai (13.6), cancelled by "Kiukiang" bilingual dotted rim d.s., with framed "Notice of Second Attempted Delivery", a scarce and attractive post-liberation use of four Nationalist Ordinary Mail Provincial Unit stamps to pay registered letter postage. Chan S71; CSS1465, a. Estimate 5,000 - 6,000 Kiukiang was liberated on 17 May 1949. Communist stamps were not issued in Nanchang until 2 July. When this letter was mailed, Nationalist postage for domestic ordinary mail was 4c. and the registry fee was 12c. The "Notice of Second Attempted Delivery" chop is discussed in "A Concise Catalogue of Postal Cancellation of China (1872-1949)" in Chapter 63.
