Macao, 1832 (14 Jan.) entire letter datelined "Cantao [Canton] 14 de Jani de 1832" to Lisbon showing "Cor° Maritimo" h.s. and handstruck "80" rating adjacent, both applied in Lisbon, very fine and rare early cover from China to Portugal. Estimate HK$ 15,000 - 20,000

For four to five months every year, foreign merchants and ships were allowed into Canton to trade. The above letter is an example of such trade involving the Portuguese vessel "Carolina". It unusually did not go through the Macao post office and was postmarked on arrival in Lisbon.

Macao, 1843 (17 July) entire letter from Russell & Co., Macao to Boston (25.2.44) "pr 'Chilton'" showing on reverse "Forwarded by/Goodhue & Co./New York" and "Forwarded by/Cary & Co./New York" oval h.s. both in red, with manuscript annotation "Received in N.Y. Feb. 22", charged "18¾" and "39". Letter describes "New Regulations" (opening of China Treaty Ports) taking effect "1st August at Canton where more activity may be expected, meantime vessels unsecured remain outside" and observes there is likewise not much demand at ports up the coast until they are formally opened. Carried by captain of bark "Chilton" from Macao to Canton, clipper "Ann McKim" from Canton to New York, where unusually handled by two forwarders and posted to Boston with 18¾c. 150-400 mile letter charge. Fine and scarce with very rare usage of double forwarders in New York. Estimate HK$ 8,000 - 10,000
