Hong Kong, 1841 (26 Mar.) officer's entire letter from Captain P. Anstruther of Madras Artillery, "Ship Rustomjee Cowasjee, Canton River" to member of Madras Civil Service, Nellore, India, endorsed "China Expedition letter" showing on reverse "Calcutta/Ship Letter/Bearing 15" framed d.s., "G.P.O." framed d.s. (3.5) in red and "A.M." framed h.s., containing long message from Captain Anstruther mentioning his imprisonment by the Chinese (having been only recently been freed 23 Feb. after a five month captivity), observing that his superior Montgomerie being a little better "so I don't get his command as early as I expected", accompanying Sir Hugh Gough (who was appointed military commander of the British forces in December 1840) on reconnaissance parties, "poor Loveday's fate in Afghanistan", his "anxiously" looking forward to going to Macao on a trip (where he'd buy "a host of curios"), and Captain Elliot's "mean and false hearted" tactics going up the river "in a steamer with a flag of truce flying..." breaking the obstacles and barriers "& then fires on the fort - for which he deserves hanging." A fine and important early letter full of character from the First Opium War from an officer who had just been freed from imprisonment by the Chinese opponents. Estimate HK$ 25,000 - 30,000
Provenance: Sir Percival David.
Captain Anstruther had been captured by natives on the island of Chusan on 16 Sept. 1840. Chusan had been taken in July 1840 in the first real fighting of the First Opium War. Anstruther had a habit of exploring the hills around the garrison town of Tinghai and was captured during one of these excursions. He was imprisoned in Ningpo with a few other Britons, including Ann Noble who was to go on to became a national heroine, for five months. The captives were released as an implicit part of the Chuenpi Convention of 20 Feb. 1841 that included the cession of Hong Kong. Captain Anstruther subsequently assumed command of the Madras Artillery and participated in the assault on Canton and the capture of Ningpo. The latter force tore apart the building where the captives had been held in Ningpo, but Anstruther saved the cage in which he had been imprisoned and sent it home to Madras.
